Richard Clyburn was an English engineer who is credited with inventing an adjustable spanner in1842. Aside from him, there is another english engineer who is Edwin Beard Budding that was also credited with the invention. On September 22, 1855 improvements followed and Enoch Harris received a US patent for his spanner that permitted both the jaw width and the angle of the handles to be adjusted and locked. In 1891 or 1892, Swedish company Bahco attributed an improved design to swedish inventor Johan Petter Johansson who in 1892 received a patent. In Australia the tool was referred to as a “shifting spanner” usually abbreviated to “shifter”.
